Um dos meus livros preferidos sobre a escravidão no Brasil. Sem teorias nem tabelas, argumentos ou academês. Só a história real de duas mulheres na sociedade escravista. Trechos de uma resenha de Livio Sansone:
É uma maravilhosa micro-história sobre dominação e negociação entre escravos e senhores na zona cafeeira de São Paulo. Caetana Diz Não é um livro instigante, bem escrito e maravilhosamente documentado. …
Com sua preocupação pelos detalhes cotidianos da vida, pela afeição e pela raiva, por pequenos gestos de candura e de desafio, de conflito e negociação, pelo dar e tomar entre um senhor e escravos, e entre sua família e uma escrava, e por Caetana e sua família, o livro mostra como história e antropologia deveriam, e podem, conversar uma com a outra.
O argumento-chave (p. 4) é que, mesmo numa sociedade com uma divisão de poder radicalmente assimétrica, mais escolhas do que poderíamos imaginar existiam em todos os lados. A escrava Caetana insiste em não se casar, apesar das pressões oriundas do plantel de escravos e de seu pai. Seu status de solteira é sua maneira de lidar com a vida na fazenda. Em sua longa e infeliz luta para levar uma vida de solteira e “respeitável”, ela em última análise ganha o apoio de seu senhor e de suas poderosas conexões. Em uma reviravolta brasileira, ela mobiliza o patronato contra o patriarcado. Resta a questão de saber se isto foi possível devido a uma atitude singular ou extremamente racional por parte do dono da fazenda.
De acordo com Sandra Graham e outras pesquisas recentes, especialmente as de Robert Slenes, “os brasileiros de modo geral encontraram na família uma forma útil de ordenar a sociedade, incluindo seus próprios escravos” (p. 32). Casamentos escravos, entretanto, não eram sempre respeitados, e não era incomum que famílias fossem forçadas a se dividir. A mágoa devia ser indizível. Talvez tenha sido isso o que Caetana quisesse evitar. Ela combateu o patriarcalismo do senhor assim como o dos negros. O livro detalha de que forma o poder era desempenhado reiteradamente em um contexto onde, “Na ausência de uma ideologia explícita construída sobre a raça, que os senhores brasileiros nunca se sentiram compelidos a elaborar, os donos de escravos justificavam seu poder através de uma conduta que o costume gradualmente estabelecera como apropriada” (p. 53). …
O livro mostra o quão complexa e segmentada era a escravidão brasileira. Escravos manumissos com freqüência se mantinham na órbita do antigo senhor – gostasse ele ou não. Manumissão era uma coisa; cidadania real era uma questão completamente diferente. A marca registrada da verdadeira liberdade estava na capacidade de não desempenhar funções servis. Se o senhor estivesse realmente em débito para com um de seus escravos, além de declará-lo livre, lhe daria um par de escravos. Uma outra marca registrada da escravidão brasileira era uma combinação peculiar de abuso físico violento e intimidade (p. 149), associada a uma alternância entre limites draconianos para a liberdade pessoal e “favores” prestados diretamente pelo senhor a um escravo específico. Não apenas o Brasil não era a terra do esclarecimento, como também não era a terra das regras claras e universais. …
Caetana Diz Não põe duas famílias sob o foco – a do mestre e a da escrava, a do dono e a da posse – detalhando os vários níveis em que elas se interconectavam. Graham vai além do arquétipo do escravo e do senhor e mostra pessoas, com caráter próprio. Para os historiadores modernos, a questão já não é se a escravidão brasileira – ou cubana, ou colombiana – era mais ou menos monstruosa que a dos Estados Unidos ou a do Caribe britânico. Mais interessante é a forma pela qual a escravidão logrou funcionar, muitas vezes contra todas as expectativas. De que maneiras as relações sociais se desenvolveram no contexto da escravidão? E como essas relações afetam hoje a sociedade brasileira e a desigualdade persistente que ainda existe na região?
Este livro oferece uma série de sugestões interessantes aos pesquisadores das relações raciais no Brasil contemporâneo: como o status e o comportamento, mais do que as regras, mantiveram as coisas em ordem; como uma hierarquia racial pode existir sem uma ideologia racial explícita; como os pobres investem na manipulação de conexões pessoais e insistem em saídas individuais para a opressão, em vez de investir em respostas coletivas.
No maravilhoso epílogo, Graham indica as maneiras pelas quais um sistema estruturado sobre graus de escravidão também podia implicar graus de liberdade.”

a situação das domésticas não é só no brasil. na ásia as condições são semelhantes. Nas Filipinas há vários estudos sobre os órfãos resultantes da maior diáspora daqueles país, e talvez a maior diáspora feminina da atualidade. Outro dia, ao voltar de Bali, embarquei em um vôo da Garuda Airlines com 50 moças contratadas para serem empregadas domésticas na China (o meu vôo parava em Singapura antes de seguir rumo para Shanghai). Nestes países asiáticos, empregada doméstica é considerada sub-raça mesmo (junto com os peões de obra) e têm categoria especial perante a lei trabalhista. Muitas vezes ouve-se casos de empregadas que se jogam dos apartamentos, ou de patrões que trancam as empregadas dentro do seu “quartinho” para não fugirem.
Os apartamentos em singapura todos têm, como no Brasil, uma “senzala” ou “quartinho de empregada”, que como no Brasil é lei de construção (pasmem!). Um total resquício dos tempos coloniais, o que Gilberto Freyre aponta muito bem em Casa Grande & Senzala. A “senzala” é localizada sempre atrás da cozinha, na área de serviço, tal qual na casa antiga colonial. Isso para mim é uma reflexão concreta sobre o ‘status quo’ das sociedades pós-coloniais nos espaços de convivência. Na Europa, sim, havia trabalho doméstico até mais ou menos a 2a. guerra mundial…depois, nas construções modernas, foi abolido o espaço de habitação para os criados. Vê-se na Paris de 1870 de Haussmann as “chambres de bonne” nos últimos andares dos edifícios, mas nos prédios modernos, muito dificil encontrar.
